* Max Stern & Co. is established 1939 in Czechoslovakia (Bratislava).

Started retail business and eventually expanded into wholesale.

In 1945 concentrated on world wide export business and

established new contacts.
 
     
     
* In 1946 - joined the American Stamp Dealers' Association.  
     
     
* Moved to Australia 1948 and opened the first shop in the

Mutual Arcade in 1952. Prior to that, traded wholesale only.
 
     
     
* Joined the Australasian Stamp Dealers' Association in 1950.  
     
     
* In 1956 moved to the newly opened Port Phillip Arcade

Melbourne and occupied a retail shop.
 
     
     
* Over the years adjoining shops were acquired and Max Stern & Co.

now occupies 9 shops plus the first floor space above which is used

as a store for accessories and bulk stocks.
 
     
     
* In 1980 was appointed agent for the British Post Office.  
     
     
* 1984 was appointed as agent for US post office.  
     
     
* Over the years Max Stern has successfully applied for 22 agencies

which include: U.S., G.B., Canada, P.R.C., Singapore, Channel

Islands, Sweden, Austria, Papua New Guinea, Israel and

New Zealand.
 
     
     
* The company has been under the personal management

of Max Stern since 1939 and he is still actively involved

in the day to day running of the business.
 
     
     
* In 1974 Mr. Sam Seigel, Chartered Accountant, joined the company

and was appointed Managing - Director in 1984.
 
     
     
* 1999 awarded AM (member of the order of Australia)

promotion for service to Philately in Australia.
 
     
     
* Max Stern was the first person in Australia to be acknowledged

as a valuer for the 'Committee on Taxation Incentives

for the Arts'. The company now employs 13 full time staff.
 
     
     
  *2001 made a Companion of the Philatelic Order of Australia

by the Philatelic Federation of Australia.
