Adelaide 1852 One Pound Type II Gold Coin gVF extremely rare

This is an extremely rare coin and part of the Australian numismatic history.
The Adelaide Pound is the first coin produced locally without Royal permission. The 1852 Bullion Act was amended to strike gold coinage by the Government Assay Office in Adelaide, to circumvent the unpopularity of ingots and facilitate the conversion of raw gold into a currency.
The first production (Type I) failed as about 50 were struck following the breakdown of the minting machinery, with only the ‘one pound’ denomination minted.
A new type was arranged (Type II) and 24,648 coins were struck, but a small percentage was circulated as it was discovered that the coin had almost ‘two shillings’ of intrinsic gold value over ‘one pound’, and withdrawn quickly.
Nevertheless, such coins in great condition are very rare and this coin offered has a conservative grade of gVF.
This is an opportunity not to be missed, and a key coin to acquire for the serious collector of Australian Colonial and Pre-Decimal coinage.
